Glaucoma care

Glaucoma care that follows the nerve over the years

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve slowly, often with no symptoms. We measure, test and image at each visit, and compare with the last one.

Many people use drops to lower eye pressure, and we prescribe and adjust them. When a laser or an operation is the next step, we refer you to the hospital's eye service and see you for the visits around it.

Treatment slows the damage for many people, and results vary. Vision lost to glaucoma does not come back, which is why regular visits matter.

What happens at the visit

A glaucoma visit takes about an hour, and the tests are repeated on a schedule your doctor sets.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Pressure and history

We measure the pressure inside each eye and ask how your drops are going.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Visual field test

You press a button when you see a light. It takes about ten minutes for each eye.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Nerve images

A scan of the optic nerve is kept so the next visit can be compared with it.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The plan

We explain what changed, whether the drops stay the same and when to return.

  • Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.

Billing and what to bring

  • How it is billed

A visit for an eye problem, an eye disease check or a follow-up is billed to medical insurance. A routine exam is billed to a vision plan. Many visits mix both, and we tell you which part goes where before you leave. If you pay yourself, we give you a written estimate on request.

    How fees work

    • Current glasses and contact lenses

    • Vision and medical insurance cards

About glaucoma care

Does glaucoma always cause symptoms?

No. Most people notice nothing until the damage is advanced, which is why the exam looks for it.

How often will I come back?

It depends on your eyes. Some people return every three to four months at first, then less often once the pressure and the fields are steady.

Will I need an operation?

Most people are followed with drops. If a procedure is the next step, we refer you to the hospital's eye service.
